Wine recommendation Chateau Cos D’Estournel Vintage 2000

Wine recommendation Chateau Cos D’Estournel Vintage 2000

Recommendation for September 2005

This months recommendation is Chateau Cos D’Estournel. The Cos D’Estournel is one of the best wines from the Deuxieme Cru 1855 Classification (Second Growth).

Chateau Cos D’Estournel is regarded by many as the finest wine within the northern commune of Saint Estèphe.

The Vintage is 2000 and they are packed in the original wooden cases. We can email you some photos if you require.

This wine is priced at an amazing 550 Pounds Sterling per case of 12 bottles plus our fees and storage.

The CEO of Chateau Cos D’Estournel

Jean-Guillaume Prats was not sure whether or not a small lot of Cabernet Franc would be added to the blend tasted. Made from yields of 40-42 hectoliters per hectare. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of green peppers, spice, cedar, and minerals. The aromatics suggest considerable complexity as this wine ages. Medium-bodied and beautifully pure, this 2000 may remain somewhat on the tough side because of an austere, abundantly tannic finish.

History of Cos D’Estournel

To give you some history on this wine – Biarnez, the poet of wines, emphasized the worldwide reputation of the wines of château Cos-d’Estournel. Every knowledgeable wine connoisseur is well acquainted with this label and the unique wine it represents, it’s full of flavour and generosity, a harmony of bouquet and well-balanced flavours. The crest of Garonne gravel which runs beside the road from Lafite to Cos is admirable soil for planting a very great vineyard. There is never too much water in winter due to the steepness of the slope and the depth of the subsoil, yet the density of the pebbles compacted with sand retains sufficient humidity for even the hottest of summer days. I should also mention to you about the generations of cellar-masters who maintain the traditions and the prestige of this growth. All these elements helped by a well-advised sales policy, combine to achieve total success, provoking admiration from professionals and well-informed amateurs alike.

Furthermore, the architecture of Cos-d’Estournel is astonishing with pinnacle turrets reminiscent of the time when the owner, Mr. D’Estournel, shipped his wines out to India and Arabia. Sometimes he would keep a few barrels on board ship, not wanting to sell them and he was known as the promoter of the wine-style “Return from the Indies”. The estate covers 100 hectares of which 64 are planted to vines.

Scott Greenberg of the Washington Examiner tasted the Cos D’Estournel in May this year and I quote “If you want a wine that you could put away for a few more years, the Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2000 at $110 US a bottle might be a good choice. It was pretty “closed down” when I tried it, although it had enough solid fruit undertones (blackberries, cassis and vanilla) and tannic structure to lead me to believe that this is a wine worth investing in for the future. Or your children’s future.”

2000 has been dubbed one of the best vintages ever for Bordeaux, and our tasters agreed, Decanter has given it nine awards – the most ever in a Decanter tasting – praise has been given for the wines for their structure, charm and consistency. For any astute wine investor to get hold of a beautiful wine like this with such a great year is extremely fortunate.

With 5 Stars voted in its decanter rating and viewed as Closed, plummy. Very rich, powerful, concentrated, voluptuous, spicy, complex gorgeous wine, finely balanced, combining power and elegance.

Steven Tanzer

Have you heard of Steven Tanzer? Tanzer is a wine columnist for Forbes. Tanzer samples more than 10,000 wines annually, spending several months each year tasting and discussing wines with their makers. He tasted the Cos D’Estournel in May 2002. He has estimated the price could increase as much as 54 Pounds a bottle. His comments were “Very good full ruby. Aromas of currant, lead pencil, licorice and currant leaf, plus a spicy earthiness. Full and thick, with deep dark fruit flavors verging on exotic. More massive than the 2001. Finishes quite long, with tannins buried under fruit.”

Tasting notes by the Chateau were:

“An exceptional year. Very good conditions for harvesting. A deep colour with shades of violet. A bouquet of spices and burnt wood with hints of orange peel and black-currant leaves. A gentle attack in the mouth with a close-knit, very unctuous background. A straightforward wine, superbly balanced, elegant and full of flavour. A long finish. Maturity: 2007 to 2025.”  “60% Cabernet and 40% Merlot with 65% new Oak Barrels.”

We anticipate this wine to go up at least 15% over the next 12 months for such an excellent vintage.

We have managed to find this wine at this price because we are able to buy in large quantities and our buying power enables us to reserve vintage wines lower than the single investor.

Robert Parker

Let me also tell you about astute wine critic and foremost influential wine expert in the industry. Robert Parker who is known as the million Dollar Nose has a very big impact on the wine market especially when he releases his tasting notes every year. This can affect a wine tremendously. He rated the wine with 92 points out of 100 and I quote from his tasting in 2003 “This wine puts on weight and grows in stature every time I go back to it. In fact, from the bottle it was better than ever. Deep bluish purple in colour with a reticent but emerging bouquet of cedar, licorice, blueberry, cassis, vanilla and lead pencil shavings, this medium bodied wine, slightly sinewy Cos D’Estournel has relatively high tannin, an excellent mid-palate and a persistent finish. Purity and classicism are hallmarks of this top flight wine. Anticipated maturity 2010-2022.”
