We’re selling each twelve bottled case of this first growth wine at just £930. This works out the amazingly low price of £77 per bottle.

Wine Recommendation for April 2006

Sure Holdings in-house team of experts have been studying the market for years, and have seen the Mouton Rothschild 1978 increase from £300 to £1200 per case, an increase of 300%.

Château Mouton Rothschild has eighty-two hectares of vines in Pauillac, Bordeaux. Pauillac is home to fifteen classified growths, three being premier. A wine grown in Pauillac’s terroir is as good as it gets.

The Marketplace

Steven Spurrier, hailed as the man with the best shoes in the wine business, tasted the Mouton 2002 at en Primeur and his wine notes were as follows:

“Huge colour, wonderfully smooth, velvety depth, a thoroughly hedonistic nose, voluptuous and seductive fruit, shows excellent ripeness and opulence, but with a ripe tannins for balance. Drink between 2008-2025. Five stars.”

The Mouton Rothschild 2002 was given a Decanter award, tasting notes on the award were:

“Big, meaty, violet, bouquet, very ripe concentration, quiet exotic. Big, plummy flavours, an explosion of ripe fruit on the palate. Very seductive, chocolatey and exotic. An impressive wine, drink between 2009-2017.”

Parker scored this vintage 96/100 and Wine Spectator gave this wine 95, both scorers influential in the wine investment community. Neal Martin gave a score of 23 from a possible 25 and his descriptive notes were:

“A very attractive nose: tobacco, black coffee. The palate has a little more power and concentration than Lafite. Again, a masculine wine but the tannins and soaked in rich cassis. Similar to the 1988 but with more class and balance. This is a great success for Mouton and my favourite First Growth of this year.”

For collectors, the 2002 Mouton Rothschild offers the best opportunity in more than twenty years to invest in Mouton. It approaches the perfection of the 1982, 1986 and 2000 vintages of Mouton but at a fraction of the price. Always the most plush and extravagant fruity first growth, Mouton Rothschild offers the perfect confluence of complexity, balance and intensity.

A fine wine from the year 2002 that has an unusually intense core of ripe, red-fruit flavours, utterly without the herbaceous notes that many otherwise promising Bordeaux vintages. Although the fruit is packed in tightly now, it will emerge triumphantly with five to ten years of aging. However, aging is not mandatory. If allowed to breathe an hour or two before consumption, most 2002s are delectable now.

Our assumption is that the Mouton will begin to come into its own in a decade from now. This is a wine to try now and lay down for later. It comes as a wonderful investment wine and one you should be proud to own in your wine portfolio. Keep it for at least five years to see the best returns.
