July 2016 Wine Investment Report

July 2016 Wine Investment Report

The fine wine market moves from strength to strength as we report another month of overall increase. This is now the 7th month in concession that the wine market has increased. These figures are not only reported by Sure Holdings but also an increase was reported by the London Vintners Exchange which tracks market data across the merchant wine market.

The Bordeaux market continued to remain the strongest segment of the fine wine market with an overall increase compared to last months valuations of 2.28%. Biggest movers were Chateau Margaux and Carruades de Lafite which is a wine that dropped substantially after 2011 and is continuing to rebound consistently in the last few months.

Second growth Bordeaux wines also contributed to the growth and showed steady growth, although not as aggressive, smaller returns of 2-3% on specific vintages. Nevertheless there could be some potential for large gains later on in the year, if you are looking for a wine investment with slightly higher risk.

The Champagne and Rhone Valley market showed some surprising increases in several of the vintages that were valued. Pegau Da Capo showed an impressive 10% jump in just four weeks. Perhaps the market is spreading their bets and now looking back to the Rhone and Champagne markets. It may be too early to tell since the Bordeaux market still commands very high demand.

Following the drop in sterling after the Brexit vote, wine market activity has been reported by wine merchants as significantly boosted from investors buying with US dollars and creating yet another month of surge in prices.

60% of the wines valued showed a positive return, while 8% showed a negative and 32% remained the same. 81% are made up of Bordeaux while 19% are made up of Champagne and Rhone Valley.

The overall gain for ALL the wines valued this month was an increase of 2.27%.  Some wines showed some very significant increases, see below for the top movers in just one month.  Enjoy the growth!
