The tasting notes from the Chateau

The tasting notes from the Château when it was first released are as follows:

‘Beautiful colour, very deep with a mixing of the Haut Brion ruby and its violet shade of youth. Swishing the wine around in the glass gives a notion of the density. This complexity is followed up in the aromas that suddenly bust forth all at once: a woody hint of fine polished oak, mulberry jam, cherry pits, a touch of blackcurrant and the bittersweet of mango. One discovers this complexness again with even more violence in the mouth. The specific notes of this vintage: the finesse of mocha, the toasted trace of praline all joined with the above, melding together with tannins of great complexity and softness. The finish is never ending.. Exceptional bottle.’

Jancis Robinson OBE, Master of Wine and wine correspondent of the Financial Times noted that the Château Haut Brion 2000 was ‘refined, tautly wound wine that was very embryonic when tasted at the end of March [much more so than La Mission]. Lots of alcohol and ripeness hidden underneath quiet inky tannins which are apparently lower by analysis than La Missions buy which taste more obtrusive because Haut Brion’s fruit is much more severe and subtle for the moment.’ She went on to rate this wine 18 out of 20.

Hervé Berland of Château Mouton Rothschild has admitted that the prices of 2000 vintages will be in demand as the magic of the millennial year is becoming increasingly desired. Depending ‘entirely on the quality of the wine’, we cannot even begin to imagine what is going to happen to the price over the next few years!
